DIS/PLACEMENTS: PERFORMANCE, MOVEMENT, AND RESISTANCE
UCSB DEPARTMENT OF THEATER AND DANCE’S
3RD ANNUAL GRADUATE SYMPOSIUM
Saturday, May 4, 2019
9 am - 4 pm
Old Ballet Studio, HSSB 1151
University of California, Santa Barbara
Every day, countless people around the globe leave their communities and nations to seek new homes. The struggle of immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and victims of removal is critical, and future disasters of environmental and ecological scales threaten to displace more people in the decades to come. At the same time, revolutionary technologies are transforming the ways we share knowledge and information. At this crucial moment, our considerations of the notion of place—and therefore, what it means to be displaced—is in flux. This graduate symposium engages aesthetic and everyday performance as a means to explore the categorization and movement of people, objects, ideas, and information.
