Brief Summary of Job Duties
Under the general supervision of the Costume Shop Manager, the Sr. Wardrobe Technician serves a Cutter/Draper/Shop Assistant in the costume shop, which provides yearly support the department's season presentations - including both dance and theater productions. The costume shop also provides limited support to numerous student/classroom projects. Primary duties include pattern-making by draping, drafting, or flat patterning methods; taking actor/dancers measurements, cutting, fitting, alterations, construction, stitching; also supervising/teaching student stitchers and crew. Secondary duties include: dyeing and craft work; maintaining stock organization (requires lifting and stairs). Duties also include general maintenance of shop, machines, stock, and inventory.
Required Work Experience
- 1-3 years Demonstrated costume building competence with pattern-making, sewing, cutting, fitting, alteration, construction, and stitching (Required)
- 1-3 years Experience assisting in organization and maintenance of costume shop and stock inventory (Required)
- 1-3 years Supervision of costume assistants (Required)
- 1-3 years Participation in costume design collaboration (Required)
Education
- High School Diploma or GED (Required)
- Bachelor's Degree BA or equivalent with comparable construction focus (Preferred)

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties
- 50% Cutting/Draping/Construction - Performs custom patterning, cutting, draping, and constructing of costumes from designer sketches and research for all departmental season productions. Includes estimating calculations for fabric yardage, closures, notions, etc. for each cutting/build project based on the designer's requests. Works with costume shop manager and Designers to move all production costume items through the cutting, build, and fitting periods, assuring that all garments are ready for dress rehearsal deadlines.
- 15% Fittings - Attends all fittings for the original garments constructed during each show build period to ensure the delivery of a high-quality costume.
- 15% Alterations/Reconstructions - Performs alterations as needed on existing, purchased, or rented costume garments. Alterations may be simple to complex. Complete reconstruction may be required on some garments.
- 10% Craft Work - Performs high-end craft work that may include (but is not limited to) the following: dyeing, millinery work, and painting.
- 5% Supervision/Labs - May assist in the supervision of limited hire and student employees under the direction of the Costume Shop Manager. May also supervise undergraduate students in costume labs or individually when needed. Work would include teaching sewing and construction skills, as well as wardrobe run crew skills.
- 5% Organization/Maintenance/Restock - Assists the costume shop manager with the organization, maintenance, and improvements needed within the costume shop facilities and stock inventory. May include creating new patterns and slopers to improve and strengthen the existing stock.
